To all you tall skinny guys...

So one of my first posts on here was about how much weight I should gain for my height. I’m 133 and 5’10. Now, this was before I even started boxing. Everyone answered that I shouldnt try to gain weight, that I would be a lot taller than everyone in my weight class and it would be to my advantage. I didn’t believe them…

So, I’ve been boxing for 4 days now lol. Got to spar for my first time today. Wasnt scared or anything, but I was a bit worried as the kid I sparred has been boxing for two years. Now, he weighs the same as me, but is maybe 3-4 inches shorter. He was definatly a better fighter technically, but I was easily able to bully him around with my size, had him backing up and against the ropes the whole time. Was able to land a lot more punches than he did. Needless to say, I now believe the advice that everyone gave me from the start. So dont worry all you skinny bean poles out there, dont bother gaining weight ;D.

hi dude i boxed age 15-16 years old as a light heavy thats was long time ago im 6’3
this feb i decided to get in shape ive gone from 225lbs back to 175 lbs so now im as strong as i was but can kick ass lol
im now 35 years old

Dont talk too soon. You say that guys been boxing for two years, if hes worth his salt, he could have gone home on you anytime he wanted.
I do much better in sparring against guys who have been going longest, just because they hold back more, and let you have a go.

Yes, you do have an advantage of being taller, which generally gives you the reach advantage also. Use that to develop your style. Don’t underestimate your partner though. He’s working with you. He’s your sparring partner, you’re not his.

Not tryin to say the other kid couldnt have kicked my butt at any time he wanted to. I was watchin him practice his combos befor I got into the ring with him, and obviously, he is much better than me. Just pointing out that during the sparring session, he was complaining to the trainer that he couldn’t do anything. Something like: Trainer: “Good kid, your doing good” Him: “Then why the hell am I taking so many shots?” Again, not trying to hype myself up here, just trying to give a little bit of a boost to those of us who get down on ourselves for being so damn skinny.

yh ive always thiught of trying to gain a few more pounds imbout 5"10 and weigh 10 stone(sorry not sure what that is in pounds) but people tell me that i shouldent bother gaiining more weight, because i would loose my speed and also i have a godd reach because im quite lanky. but i havent managed to join a gym at the moment, mainly because my mom wont let me >:mad

Yo won’t loose any speed as long as you train right.
You will if you force bulk onto your self.
How old are you? If you’re like 16 I bet you end up putting on 2 stone by the time you are 18

Sprints and Plyos will increase your speed and if you are eating right probably put mass onto you.

Safe if you work the bag properly, if you’re just doing all of these pitter patter punches constantly you’ll just gain muscular endurance and stamina… but if you train properly you’ll gain that plus speed-Strength (or 'power ;))

“Power”. Glad to finally see that word used correctly on this forum. The amount of force applied in a certain amount of time, or speed-strength as AdamGB put it. Its a term we use quite often in rock climbing. I come to boxing with an extensive background in training knowlege from rock climbing, and I hope to apply a lot of what I learned in climbing to boxing. As i gain more knowlege about boxing, hopefully I will be able to write a few good training articles for this site. Let me get past day 4 of boxing though first ;).

Learn more about boxing first.
The thing i found, the more i learnt, the less i knew.

While we are on the topic of skinny people, I have some questions.

Im 6’, 133 lbs. Im looking to be stronger, and gain muscle.

Ive been doing 70 pushups a night, 3 sets of curls 10 reps (28lbs), and 70 crunches.
Sound like a decent workout?

Ive been drinking Whey and I cant really tell if its working. Could Creatine benefit me more?

Any tips?

PS. After doing pushups for 3 months now, I have boobs, but my arms arent any bigger.

flip, first off, how old are ya? if you’re young, give it time , your weight can change in a hurry. when i was a junior in high school, i was 5’11" and weight around 135. came back to school after summer break at around 195. went back down to 160 between the start of my senior year and the start of my freshman year of college. anyway, in your daily workouts, do you do a lot of running and other cardio types of activities? they are important, and i’m definitely not suggesting to stop them, but if you are doing too much, it will be very hard to put on any weight. also, just curious, how heavy are you looking to go?

read my post in the reps posting I was 6’4" and 161lbs when i was 16 and didnt break 200 till i was 20! Its hard to be tall and skinny, I know. I was.
And its hard to gain weight or muscle when your young as you don’t have enough testosterone to grow everything all at once and gain weight. Dont work too hard. Lower reps say 12-15 or so, more sets maybe 5. heavy as you can ,longer rests between sets, maybe only 2 or 3 muscle groups per day 3,4 days rest between workouts for the muscle group. Lots of food and LOTS of rest and sleep. oh and patience. All pretty standard muscle building stuff.

10 stone in pounds is 140 pounds i believe

Im about 6ft 4 nd weigh 12 1/2 stone nd im not particualy fat but im by no means fit nd that is through my own fault bcos i always say to my self right starting from next week im gonna start running nd doing push ups nd sit ups at night nd morning but never follow my plan through. Well my point is does people generaly think if ur skinny u r fit or if ur fat ur unfit cos like when im down the park nd play football (soccer) with some people nd after playing around about 20 minutes i start to get worn out but theres some fat kids that carry on running for ages even longer than some of my mates that r in gd shape. Also in boxing people like danny williams nd sam peters can fight for twelve round nd there massive nd i no there not the miost talented but there is james toney who is huge for his size aswell.

Haha, well thanks for the help, but I am near 20. So I dont think that im going to be able to grow a whole lot more. I would be happy with 145 of muscle.

well flip, ya never know. you can bulk up later, but i suppose it depends on genetics. if your parents are bean poles, i would guess you may be too, but who knows. anyway, good luck to ya.

Yeah thanks. I dont have a problem with being 133 lbs, but I just want to pack the most punch I can for someone my size, and look good while doing it. lol
