29.08.07 - Werrington’s Scott Lawton came face to face with Amir Khan today at a press conference held in the council chamber of Nottingham City Council. The pair will meet in the ring at the city’s National Ice Arena on 6th October when Khan’s Commonwealth lightweight title may be on the line..
During the conference Lawton, with his unique brand of child-like honesty, sent Khan onto the back foot when he declared that: “Amir is a step backwards for me. I see this fight as a stepping-stone to a re-match with Jon Thaxton. Thaxton is the best lightweight in the country and I want his British title.â€Â
Khan responded by suggesting that he was the biggest name in British boxing and therefore Lawton’s biggest fight to date. He did however acknowledge that Thaxton warranted greater media attention and that he would take on the Norwich man at some future date.
Lawton insisted: “It’s Thaxton and a British title that I want and I just see you (Amir) as a way of getting another shot at him.â€Â
Both fighters looked fit and confirmed that they were in training and that they had each been studying the other’s fights on video. Neither boxer would be drawn on tactics but both Khan and Lawton agreed that Amir would be working hard to iron out any inadequacies in his game that led to the knockdown by Willie Limmond last time out.
Meanwhile, Scott Lawton is also busy preparing for Impact Boxing’s own event which takes place at Fenton Manor Sports Complex on 29th September. The event will now feature seven bouts including Chris Edwards in a warm up fight before his own British and Commonwealth featherweight title bout with Dale Robinson.
Tickets for the Khan fight are selling well with over 300 having been purchased by Lawton supporters already. Demand for seats is very high and the event is likely to be a sell-out. Tickets for both shows are available from Impact Boxing in Stoke on 0845 156 7168 or by visiting www.impactboxing.com
being known by the old wives and the viewers of Paul O’ Grady isn’t what makes a boxer a class operator. Surel Amir knows this?!?!? he’s letting the hype and public attention go to his head if not. He shouldn’t forget his worth - just because he is more well known to the sorts who know sweet nothing about boxing - doesn’t make him ‘bigger’ than Hatton or Calzaghe or even Jono Thaxton or Junior Witter to be honest.
Thats not what he said though, he said “I’m the biggest name in british boxing”!!! I wonder what Joe and Rick will make of that ;D Seeing as there both in £4£ fights against two undefeated fighters in sold out arenas on PPV making millions, I bet they wish they were as big as Amir!! :
I’m starting to think it could go a bit ‘Audley Harrison’ for Amir. Sure, he is a household name to the man on the street. But I think he’s alienated a fair few boxing fans with his comments/attitude (for me it was his comments about Thaxton >:(). If he loses as fight or two will anyone actually care about him? You know Bernard Dunne will still be well supported after his loss at the weekend, but if Amir lost in a similar way, that’s his bubble burst. Mr and Mrs Semi-detached turn off ITV and it’s time to roll out the excuses for why you never won the world title you were certain to after beating Dan the Dustman in your first pro fight.
I like Khan, i am a fan but there are a number of boxers i think of before khan in regards to “The best known boxer in britain” Ricky Hatton, Joe Calazghe are the top two and i think of Jon Thaxton, Carl Froch, David Haye, even Witter before Khan springs to mind.
I supose in a way we can’t really blame him because he has all those knobs around him telling him he will be world champion withn his first 14 fights which just aint gonna happen.
don’t forget we’ve always got the Warren Boxing Union and the Warren Boxing Organisation to fall back on!! if Frank feels its the right time to exploit the public into believing the whole ‘world title’ angle then he could get this fight. Although selling the same shit on a different day from a new angle really isn’t Frank’s style is it?
