Will size matter?

In the upcoming bout between PBF and Baldimor, the fighters will be made to wear 10oz gloves instead of the usual 8oz.

What are peoples thoughts on this?

Will the bigger gloves slow floyd down and will it take away from some of his power?

It could give Baldi that little bit extra edge that he would need, any thoughts?

Corect me If im wrong but wasnt he using 10 pound gloves vs gatti ???

If so then obviously no!

Either way ive seen clips of mayweather using 25 pounders on the mitts and he is still electric.

not sure one shot mate

i took it from this article http://www.boxingbuzz.com/peter-klitschko/jgon5.htm

he does say he has used them before so maybe your correct, here is the section i took it from

"Both fighters will be wearing 10-oz. gloves for the first time in their careers. Since the recent passing of Leavander Johnson, the Nevada State Athletic Commission enacted a rule that fighters from 135 up must wear the larger gloves. “I think the Nevada Commission is the best commission in the world. And not only because I live in Vegas am I saying that. But I am an ‘Old School’ fighter. Let us fight with 8-oz. gloves. 10 oz. is what the amateurs use. They say it’s for the safety of the fighter, but fighters have been using 8-oz. for a hundred years, said Mayweather.

When asked if he was concerned about the size of gloves taking away from his hand speed and power, the pound-for-pound extraordinaire responded, “I am not worried about that. It’s not easy work, but I have used 10-oz. before. I just have to get used to it.”

Baldomir disagrees with that assessment vehemently, even though he wasn’t aware that he was using 10-oz. gloves. “It will slow him down. And if he hits me, he wont hurt me,” the champion emphatically stated.

mayweather must be as strong as superman if he can use gloves weighing nearly two stone mate!!! ;D ;D

Size always matters  ;D

;D

does it??? I’m always told it doesn’t :-[ ;D

Anyone who’s telling you that is just telling you what they think you want to hear ;D

“size doesn’t matter Daz, I actually prefer a freakishly big one” - I was once told :o ;D

I can’t see it making that much difference personally. Floyd is always in top shape and probably trains & spars with heavier gloves than that.

It would also slow down Baldomir just as much and he already punches like he’s underwater compared to Floyd. ;D

i think it’ll affect floyd more than Baldomir.

:smilie_pinoc:

Doesn’t matter, Baldomir’s come forward style is made for floyd, especially as baldomir’s speed is really slow.

I see a unanimous decision for floyd.

[quote]Baldomir: Mayweather ‘Will Be Easier Than Judah’

By Jerry Glick in NYC: The two best and most outstanding Welterweights in the world-sorry Antonio Margarito, but these two are the best 147 pounders-will face off on November 4, 2006 at Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas; Carlos “Tata” Baldomir will defend his WBC Welterweight Title against the Pound 4 Pound king, Pretty Boy Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The event was made official at a press conference held at the heavily mirrored, Tavern on the Green in Central Park in New York City. The promotion is called “Pretty Risky.”

Promoter Dan Goosen said he wanted to call it Pretty ‘Damn’ Risky but was out voted. The show will be promoted by Goosen Tudor Promotions in conjunction with Mandalay Bay, and HBO-PPV.

Baldomir has not lost a fight since 1998. The last fellow to beat him was one Alberto de las Mercedes-Cortes by an eight round unanimous decision in Buenos Aires, Argentina; practically in Baldomir’s old neighborhood.

He grew up in Sante Fe and admits that he is not that city’s most important boxer. That position is, and will forever be, held by the late, great former Middleweight Champion of the World Carlos Monzon. Monzon died tragically at a mere 52 years of age, but his name is written in stone for all boxing fans in his home town, and that includes the current Welterweight King also named Carlos.

Baldomir says that he is a modern day Cinderella Man because he came out of the streets of Argentina to rule the Welterweights.

Why would Baldomir risk his title, which is the real title at 147 pounds, against the most dangerous opponent in the division? Because the rewards can be found nowhere else.

“To reaffirm that I am, indeed, a great Champion,” said a confident Baldomir, “and that’s why I accepted the fight with him.”

Baldomir feels that Mayweather lacks heart, “He is faster and more talented than Gatti,” said the Champion when he compared the two opponents, "but he doesn’t have the heart.

As for Judah, Baldomir claimed that there are similarities between the Brooklyn south paw and Mayweather, but that Mayweather will be easier.

“They are actually the same but it is easier with Mayweather because he comes right at you,” added Baldomir.

Baldomir claims that he is doing nothing different in training as he prepares for the biggest challenge of his career.

“I’m 35 years of age,” said Baldomir, “I can’t do more than what I’ve done to prepare for other fights. I will do what I normally do to get ready for him.”

Nevertheless, Baldomir is realistic about the task in front of him.

“It will be a difficult fight with Mayweather,” admitted Baldomir, “because he is fast and he’s sharp, but I know that with my physical ability and my boxing ability I will no doubt win.”

Baldomir makes no predictions as to how he will win. Only that he will win, but…

“I feel that if I do connect, he’s going down,” added Baldomir.

Where Baldomir is an understated type of personality, Mayweather is all shout and bravado. I guess you get that way when the world tells you are the best. That you are among people such as Ray Robinson, Ray Leonard, Ali, Hagler, and all the other greats that boxing has produced. It is called ego. Mayweather gets a pass on this from this reporter. It is okay for a fighter who has never lost in his ten years as a pro, 36 fights 36 wins with 24 KO’s, and who has demonstrated that he is the best, to talk the talk because he walks the walk.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. says that now is his time. That Roy Jones Jr. was at the top for many years, but he “Should have quit after he beat Tarver,” said Mayweather.

“I am a throwback fighter,” claims Mayweather, “most fighters, after a fight, they are out drinking and abusing their body. Me, I’m always in the gym. I’m always training I’m treating my body with respect, and I’m treating the sport with respect. I’m the face of boxing.”

Mayweather doesn’t see himself falling into the same trap as Baldomir’s last two opponents.

“I think Gatti got fatigued,” said Mayweather “and Zab overlooked him.”

Mayweather does not see a great champion in Baldomir.

“He had Zab hurt,” said Mayweather, “and a true Champion is a great finisher.”

As everyone knows Baldomir had Judah out on his feet but was unable to stop him. That may not be an issue as Baldomir isn’t really a puncher. He’s a strong guy, but he has only thirteen KO’s among his 43 wins against 9 losses and six draws. That does not a puncher make. He wins by being stronger and better not by power punching.

One problem that has colored the Mayweather corner is the suspension of his uncle and trainer, Roger Mayweather in Las Vegas. The fighter is not worried.

“I got my same team,” said Mayweather. “Like I said before, after 126 fights I think I can hold things down for 30 minutes.”

A win by Mayweather will set up other opportunities for him. The biggest one may get away from him.

“Oscar De La Hoya is a great fighter, businessman, and promoter,” said Mayweather. If he’s looking forward to fighting Trinidad, then let him go ahead and fight Trinidad. What I’m going to do is fight Baldomir, then Team Mayweather will go out and negotiate another big fight."

Baldomir has upset the odds before and Mayweather will be ready for him.

“This is blood, sweat and tears for me,” said Mayweather. “I fight every fight like it’s my last fight.”

“I know that he’s going to bust his ass because he knows that this is his last payday. So I know he’s going to give it his all,” predicted Pretty Boy.

But he warned Baldomir of one thing; “If you’ve been knocked out before it could happen again.”

“He’s either going to go out on his back or on his face. Or maybe he’ll raise that white flag in the air. There three ways it could go,” added Mayweather.

Baldomir was stopped once in the second round. It was in his seventh fight in 1994.

There is a mutual love between Mayweather and his promoter Dan Goosen.

“Dan Goosen is the greatest promoter ever,” said Mayweather.

Goosen has similar feelings for Mayweather.

“November 4th is his next step in his legacy,” said Goosen. "He felt that he has the ability to go out there and become one of the greatest of all time. I see it, the media see it, the fans see it, and he knows it. To be involved with a fighter that will go down in history like this is an honor.

Mayweather is massive favourite. Baldy is built for Mayweather. Slow, steady and always always right there right in front. To beat Maywetaher you need to be a whirlwind of non-stop punching. Baldomir just isn’t.

Like i have said before i think Floyd will totally dominate and make Baldi look stupid and clumsy, and then take a landslide UD. Floyd is one of the fastest fighters, Baldi is probably one of the slowest, perfect match for Floyd.

Exactly . I think everyone on this thread has pretty much sussed out how this fight is guna pan out .

Floyds guna look the part , landing at will , making Baldy miss and countering with speed and precision .

I just had a look through boxrec to see what kind of careera Baldys had and some of the names that have beaten him are pretty bad .Paulo Alejandro Sanchez stopped him in 2 rounds and Sergio Acuna beat him ( Brits may remember Acuna as the Argie who lost to Farnell and was stopped in 1 by Steve Roberts )

On paper atleast Baldy stands no chance but when you see him in the ring that doesnt inspire belief in him either . He is slow , lacks pace , lacks technical skills and with only 13 k.os in 58 , punches like a girl . Floyd will have to make a major mistake if he is to f** this 1 up IMO

Try telling Arturo that Baldy doesnt hit hard. At any rate, Baldy does have some pop. Knockout ratios dont always tell the story, sometimes as in Baldy’s case its technique. A fighter could be fighting a bear, but if you cant set up a fighter to land good shots, your KO ratio can look like Baldy’s. That is his problem, every fight I have seen him in he lacks KO TECHNIQUE. He walks opponents down but doesnt cut the ring off, he relies on being the more determined and stronger fighter as his key to victory, still I have seen him be deceptive in his placement of punches and he IS a good fighter.

He’s a good fighter against a slugger like Gatti who has been in one too many wars. He’s absolutely made for a speedy boxer like Mayweather. He’ll barely land a punch, and he doesn’t have enough pop for the ones he lands to really wear Floyd down. He’s tough though, and Floyd is no puncher so it will be a UD victory.

Floyd punches harder than many observers think, his opponents always say they didnt expect him to bang as hard as he does. Judah is fast and Baldy passed that test, so this will not be an easy fight.
