[quote]Baldomir: Mayweather ‘Will Be Easier Than Judah’
By Jerry Glick in NYC: The two best and most outstanding Welterweights in the world-sorry Antonio Margarito, but these two are the best 147 pounders-will face off on November 4, 2006 at Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas; Carlos “Tata” Baldomir will defend his WBC Welterweight Title against the Pound 4 Pound king, Pretty Boy Floyd Mayweather Jr.
The event was made official at a press conference held at the heavily mirrored, Tavern on the Green in Central Park in New York City. The promotion is called “Pretty Risky.”
Promoter Dan Goosen said he wanted to call it Pretty ‘Damn’ Risky but was out voted. The show will be promoted by Goosen Tudor Promotions in conjunction with Mandalay Bay, and HBO-PPV.
Baldomir has not lost a fight since 1998. The last fellow to beat him was one Alberto de las Mercedes-Cortes by an eight round unanimous decision in Buenos Aires, Argentina; practically in Baldomir’s old neighborhood.
He grew up in Sante Fe and admits that he is not that city’s most important boxer. That position is, and will forever be, held by the late, great former Middleweight Champion of the World Carlos Monzon. Monzon died tragically at a mere 52 years of age, but his name is written in stone for all boxing fans in his home town, and that includes the current Welterweight King also named Carlos.
Baldomir says that he is a modern day Cinderella Man because he came out of the streets of Argentina to rule the Welterweights.
Why would Baldomir risk his title, which is the real title at 147 pounds, against the most dangerous opponent in the division? Because the rewards can be found nowhere else.
“To reaffirm that I am, indeed, a great Champion,” said a confident Baldomir, “and that’s why I accepted the fight with him.”
Baldomir feels that Mayweather lacks heart, “He is faster and more talented than Gatti,” said the Champion when he compared the two opponents, "but he doesn’t have the heart.
As for Judah, Baldomir claimed that there are similarities between the Brooklyn south paw and Mayweather, but that Mayweather will be easier.
“They are actually the same but it is easier with Mayweather because he comes right at you,” added Baldomir.
Baldomir claims that he is doing nothing different in training as he prepares for the biggest challenge of his career.
“I’m 35 years of age,” said Baldomir, “I can’t do more than what I’ve done to prepare for other fights. I will do what I normally do to get ready for him.”
Nevertheless, Baldomir is realistic about the task in front of him.
“It will be a difficult fight with Mayweather,” admitted Baldomir, “because he is fast and he’s sharp, but I know that with my physical ability and my boxing ability I will no doubt win.”
Baldomir makes no predictions as to how he will win. Only that he will win, but…
“I feel that if I do connect, he’s going down,” added Baldomir.
Where Baldomir is an understated type of personality, Mayweather is all shout and bravado. I guess you get that way when the world tells you are the best. That you are among people such as Ray Robinson, Ray Leonard, Ali, Hagler, and all the other greats that boxing has produced. It is called ego. Mayweather gets a pass on this from this reporter. It is okay for a fighter who has never lost in his ten years as a pro, 36 fights 36 wins with 24 KO’s, and who has demonstrated that he is the best, to talk the talk because he walks the walk.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. says that now is his time. That Roy Jones Jr. was at the top for many years, but he “Should have quit after he beat Tarver,” said Mayweather.
“I am a throwback fighter,” claims Mayweather, “most fighters, after a fight, they are out drinking and abusing their body. Me, I’m always in the gym. I’m always training I’m treating my body with respect, and I’m treating the sport with respect. I’m the face of boxing.”
Mayweather doesn’t see himself falling into the same trap as Baldomir’s last two opponents.
“I think Gatti got fatigued,” said Mayweather “and Zab overlooked him.”
Mayweather does not see a great champion in Baldomir.
“He had Zab hurt,” said Mayweather, “and a true Champion is a great finisher.”
As everyone knows Baldomir had Judah out on his feet but was unable to stop him. That may not be an issue as Baldomir isn’t really a puncher. He’s a strong guy, but he has only thirteen KO’s among his 43 wins against 9 losses and six draws. That does not a puncher make. He wins by being stronger and better not by power punching.
One problem that has colored the Mayweather corner is the suspension of his uncle and trainer, Roger Mayweather in Las Vegas. The fighter is not worried.
“I got my same team,” said Mayweather. “Like I said before, after 126 fights I think I can hold things down for 30 minutes.”
A win by Mayweather will set up other opportunities for him. The biggest one may get away from him.
“Oscar De La Hoya is a great fighter, businessman, and promoter,” said Mayweather. If he’s looking forward to fighting Trinidad, then let him go ahead and fight Trinidad. What I’m going to do is fight Baldomir, then Team Mayweather will go out and negotiate another big fight."
Baldomir has upset the odds before and Mayweather will be ready for him.
“This is blood, sweat and tears for me,” said Mayweather. “I fight every fight like it’s my last fight.”
“I know that he’s going to bust his ass because he knows that this is his last payday. So I know he’s going to give it his all,” predicted Pretty Boy.
But he warned Baldomir of one thing; “If you’ve been knocked out before it could happen again.”
“He’s either going to go out on his back or on his face. Or maybe he’ll raise that white flag in the air. There three ways it could go,” added Mayweather.
Baldomir was stopped once in the second round. It was in his seventh fight in 1994.
There is a mutual love between Mayweather and his promoter Dan Goosen.
“Dan Goosen is the greatest promoter ever,” said Mayweather.
Goosen has similar feelings for Mayweather.
“November 4th is his next step in his legacy,” said Goosen. "He felt that he has the ability to go out there and become one of the greatest of all time. I see it, the media see it, the fans see it, and he knows it. To be involved with a fighter that will go down in history like this is an honor.
