Meanwhile, promoter Frank Warren, still annoyed at suggestions in the South Wales Echo that ITV were unhappy with the viewing figures for their boxing shows, points out that they have, in fact, offered him a new contract, but he turned it down. Negotiations are continuing.
It is to be hoped that they prove successful, as the loss of terrestrial coverage for the likes of Calzaghe, Enzo Maccarinelli and the rest would be a major blow.
I think Frank would look pretty stupid if he moved to Setanta now. He’s been banging on about how he’s pretty much single-handedly bringing boxing back to the mainstream in the UK, etc and talking about rekindling the good old days of Benn, Eubank, Watson et al.
I think it’s just an empty threat/bargaining chip to negotiate a better deal with ITV.
Thing is,if he blows out ITV he’s gotta take his fighters somewhere and it’s a strange one because a lot of people firmly believe that ITV pull the Khan strings.
Both parties have invested too much into the relationship to let it slip now. Frank Warren is just being his usual hard-nosed self when it comes to negotiating. Of course he isn’t going to accept their first offer.
Trust me, he won’t be leaving ITV anytime soon, not of his own volition.
But if Frank did cut his partnership with ITV, which British promoters are gonna step up and get boxing back on terrestrial television. Are the BBC considering getting boxing back on our screens, will ITV look for an alternative?
To be fair the ITV shows have been 1 farce after another . Earl vs Katsidis is the only good fight I can think of . Kahns fights have all been predictable . Nobody stands out in the round robin of heavyweight fights and Joe has performed well just once
It will be a blow for boxing if its taken off terrestrial television but perhaps ITV could look at working with a better promoter
