Teo Lopez ordered to defend world title against Jack Catterall

Teofimo Lopez has been ordered to defend his WBA world title against Briton Jack Catterall.

Catterall, 33, is Lopez’s mandatory challenger but the American has been campaigning to fight WBC champion Ryan Garcia in a unification bout instead.

The WBA has now announced they expect Lopez to fight Catterall next, and the two parties have until 22 October to reach an agreement or there will be a purse bid.

Catterall became the number one challenger and WBA ‘regular’ title-holder after beating Shakhram Giyasov in May.

Lopez, a three-weight world champion, could withdraw from negotiations and relinquish his world title, which may lead to Catterall being upgraded to world champion.

Jack Catterall says "Of course it would make perfect sense to fight on the Fury vs Joshua card.

"That would be great for me to fight on that bill, but it is if Teo fancies the trip over here.

"It could warrant having its own card in America, but yeah it’d be nice.

“I would be open to doing that as well [boxing on Fury vs AJ bill for vacant title].”

Currently I’d give Jack the edge too but guarantee that he gets Sandor Martin-ed on the cards. Skeptic in me says there is zero chance Teo takes the fight, and he’ll be allowed to opt out with eyes on Ryan. Getting really tired of mandos issued and ignored. Fans have turned into fanager’s and keyboard accountants to defend it with “but he’s getting the bag” bs.
