Steward to train Cotto

Pelea antes de la pelea - El Nuevo Día

it’s in spanish but well basically says that Emanuel Steward will be training Miguel Cotto for his upcoming fight against Yuri Foreman, is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Good thing. I love Steward.

Good news for Cotto.

Manny is no yes - man for starters :), and he might be able to improve Cotto’s defence and maybe bring his confidence back.

I personally don’t think Manny makes a huge difference but i sure hope he does.

Smart move by Steward. Foreman is garbage. Plus rolling with Cotto is better for his bank account than rolling with the Jew

Yeah he will get paid, but that won’t last long because against any of the top WWs and cotto will be smashed into instant pugilistic dementia

He’s fighting Foreman at 154. Once he smashes him, he becomes a title holder. I doubt he ever goes back to 147

well he won’t last long up there if fights sergio or paul..

i don’t think Cotto is as far out of it as others seem to think

If and when he beats Foreman he should try to get a fight with JCC jnr, good money low risk fight.

I think this is a bad partnership, Steward’s style of teaching IMO doesn’t suit Cotto’s style.

You do know Cotto beat Mosley right? You’re acting as if he’s not a top WW himself.

I tend think you may be right. However, I can’t imagine it being worse than where he came from! I think there may be a good pyschological boost for Cotto just having all that experience, especially in the corner.

GREAT NEWS!!!
I’m happy for Cotto!!!

That was before the hard mileage ass whooping he took from margarito…a rematch with mosley would all but end his career…

im with you on this one. cotto is pressure fighter. stewarts style is counter punching. look at what happend to jermaine taylor and kermit cintron. the counter punching didnt suit their style.IMO

I agree that Steward’s style may not be a perfect fit for Cotto’s but I think highly of both and believe it will work out. Everyone’s quick to say Miguel is done before the 2nd KD he gave Pac all he could handle and with a better game plan could have made it into a heck of a fight. I think Miguel outpoints Shane today in a 116-112ish fashion. I’ve never seen so much hype around a guy who could hardly outbox Mayorga. Sure he knocked out the stone foot remarkably slow Margarito. Oh well it’ll all come to a crashing end May 1.

Mr. Steward ruined Tommy Hearns by keeping him a welter too many years and when he went up in weight, he was lucky to take his power with him to some extent but Steward didn’t train Tommy to last. Marvin Hagler and Iran Barkley and Iran Barkley were examples of overconfidence and not enough endurance at Middleweight. He trained his fighters in 90degree heat at Kronk Gym year round. I forget the name of the fighter from Puerto Rico that Hearns won the title from but he couldn’t crack an egg with his fists and Tommy trained by Steward resorted to winning on a bicycle.

Nobody’s sure about how much gas Cotto has remaining but one thing is for sure: If we go back on the question, there is not many coaches as great as Mannie around and Cotto finally put his hands on one that will force him to work hard and to rethink some of his strategies, that and to learn to fight differently if needed. A very good thing for him.

Cotto has not got too long left, his face get battered very quickly and I do not think he is motivated to carry on any further. He probably wants to win another title at the higher weight, defend it a couple of times against big name opponents, maybe Floyd and retire.

Great newz man
