He’s set to retire tomorrow after not getting the mayweather fight. A conference call has been arranged for Wednesday and it is expected that De La Hoya will either retire or, at least, announce that he won’t be fighting again for the remainder of 2006.
awwww HORSE SHAT!!! this is a horrible move for him…the PBF fight is prime and he needs to capitalize on it now…Margarito definitely has a punchers chance with PBF and the fight may never happen…I don’t think he should possibly throw away the biggest selling PPV ever like this…it may never happen if thats the case…this will be a sad day for boxing if he does announce this tomorrow…
Sounds like more narcissim and affectation from the Goldenboy.
He’ll no doubt say he’s going to quit only for a huge announcement at the last minute that the Mayweather fight has come through.
Then he’ll be pictured looking skywards for inspiration and guidance and then he’ll announce , ‘I’m ready,’ , and everyone will cheer and roar, there will be 3 billion PPV’s and he will be on the cover of all major magazines, probably bring out a song and write his autobiography.
Oh and him and his child will feature in Vogue or Time Magazine.
They may even feature a picture of him blessing some poor person, or giving out meals to the homeless, perhaps heal a blind man.
I think he was inspired by Hopkins going out with a bang. With Mayweather there’s a risk he could lose or look terrible in losing or winning and he wouldn’t want to go out like that
Oscar really needed that fight. Five career mega fights (Whitaker,Quartey,Mosley,Trinidad,Hopkins) and he did not perform great in one of those matches. PBF would have been a mega fight for him but now he will retire with never performing brilliant in a super fight, he will probably be the only HOF that has that against him.
He will alway’s been known for his great performances in his two grudge matches (Vargas,Mayorga)
I’d rather loss against a great fighter trying my absoulote best one last time instead of beating a mediocre fighter and going out on top. PBF is number 1, if ODH really wants to finally put the critics/doubters to rest and build a brilliant legacy behind him he should fight the guy…And imo, it dosen’t matter if he wins or losses…It’s the fact that he had the balls to fight him.
His last stand, so to say.
say, why doesn’t ODLH give rematches to the guys that beat him. Like Whitaker and Quartey
And yes Mayorga.. he wants to go out on a good note instead of risk looking bad against Mayweather.
[/quote]let’s wait and see before giving any rash judgements…he might suprise us…
WBC super welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya won’t announce his future plans until tomorrow, but Kassim Ouma, who is promoted by Oscar and fights in the same division, may have let the cat out of the bag. According to the Daily Monitor in Ouma’s native Uganda, Team Ouma is celebrating Oscar’s retirement because it will allow Kassim to fight for the vacant WBC title earlier than expected.
I would retire if I was him. What does beating Floyd do for him? (apart from the $$)
The history books will just read that Floyd was to small for him if he wins. Even though right now PBF is the popular no1.p4p pick, who is going to remember that in years to come if Oscar KHTFO. I don’t see any big names on Mayweathers record above 135 pound.
ODLH isn’t retiring. He’s allowing Shane to try and get a fight with PBF after Vargas and get one last big payday for Shane. After PBF disposes of Shane, ODLH is gonna come out and try to fight PBF.
Five reasons why ODLH - PBF will happen next year
5. Shane beat ODLH twice, PBF will beat Shane, ODLH will get a chance to kill two birds with one stone.
4. Mosley - Mayweather will be a HUGE moneymaker for Golden Boy Promotions.
3. ODLH has a huge ego and he wants to go out knowing he was the best. He will try at least.
2. 30 Million Dollars. Letting Mayweather defeat more big names just makes PBF a bigger PPV attraction and in turn, puts more money in the pot for ODLH.
Let’s face it, De La Hoya is a huge famewhore. He needs this fight to stay in the spotlight. He’s the Paris Hilton of boxing.
