Ricky has a 65" inch reach compared to 72+" for Mayweather so working from the inside is his bread and butter in this fight.
The main concern to Team Hatton, was the fact that on the way in, Ricky would be caught and possibly cut - and that an accumulation of punches could wear Ricky down late on in the fight if he’d shipped too many.
NOW, when you have to make that dangerous trip to the inside again and again due to the Ref constantly diving in, before any exchanges could even occur, who does that favour??
I was also disgusted that after a tense moment, where Ricky was under fire, Cortez was looking for the stoppage and Ricky came firing back…
Now after such a tense moment, Ricky needed to head back to the corner to recover, to hear Billy’s calming words and to hear the next gameplan… instead we get Cortez diving in and taking up the majority of the minute threatening to stop the fight !!! Ricky didn’t need that.
If you know you have come through a bad round and then the ref is saying he’s gonna stop it, it’s gonna increase the stress to perform and so Ricky went diving in again and again and was pulled off repeatedly and forced to make that trip into Floyd’s traps continuously.
Now, you might read this and feel that i’m a blinkered Hatton fan - well, i am. But my point is that when the ref is constantly grabbing you and then when he’s not, he’s muttering your name repeatedly throughout it’s gonna take away your edge.
This fight could have taken many different turns indeed if the fight flowed.

I think he ruined the fight . I’m not guna go on about how he helped Floyd or was bias etc but I think he stopped the fight from becoming interesting . If he let em fight up close im not saying Hatton would have won but the fight would have been far easier on the eyes.
He kept breaking em up so the fight had no flow . That suited the Yank but I think weight and class had alot to do with it too
Yeah i did so pleased that MAB was there for him though and gave him a huge hug at the end. MAB looks well put on a little weight wonder if he misses the sport mind you after what the vegas judges did to him i doubt it.!!!
Yeah its been a bad year for Barrera and Ricky . Barrera walked away after terrible decisions and now Hatton has tasted his first defeat . I wonder what Barrera said to Ricky cuz everytime we saw them they were together chatting .
Joe cortez did not lose this fight for ricky. The other fighter is very skilled and even though both were well prepared , one of them stuck with the gameplan and adjusted in the later rounds
No disresepect, but the refereeing decisions are part and parcel of the game. Sometime they work in your favour, sometimes they don’t.
An argument can be made about the refereeing decisions favouring Rikcy in the fight against Tszyu, and Tszyu didn’t use that as an excuses. These things happen and the fighters have to get on with it.
At the end of the day, the better man on the night won the fight
You guys blaming the Joe Cortez for this loss need to put the crack pipe down, take a leaf out of Hatton’s book and accept that he got beaten by a much better fighter. Cortez allowed plenty of inside fighting, it is just that Hatton a) didn’t utilize the opportunities and b) didn’t count on Floyd being so effective on the inside. Floyd was wining the inside exchanges, I bet none of you predicted that.
Hatton could have had is old mate Mickey Vann in the ring with him last night, it wouldn’t have changed the result, he still would have lost.
actually my friend for the past 3 months i was saying floyd will do a great job in the inside and many probably thought i was clueless but i know floyd has good inside skills but prefers outside because that is where hes great at. Dont want to sound like a broken record but i also did say HATTON will have to watch out for the LEAD RIGHTS, lunging hooks , and short uppercuts in the inside, if u dont beleive me then look back 3 months ago in my past posts.
hehe, don’t worry I believe you mate. But on this website you could probably count on one hand the number of people who would have said “Ricky Hatton will lose the inside exchanges against Floyd Mayweather”. That would have been unconceivable to not just Hatton fans but many boxing fans in general.
It is a common misconception that Floyd cannot fight up close and personal, he laid that one to rights good and proper last night.
the referees a wr, the referees a wr. next time they sing that at man city, they wont be on about the tw*t on the pitch. regardless of the result he did us lads proud last night, no shame in that result, he showed real heart. he’ll be champ on the rematch. come on ricky!!!
That reff was a tos*er!Breaking it up and not giving hatton the chance to get stuck in!Wish they could have a rematch with a different reff!wont happen though!

Got back from Iraq a week ago, watched the fight early hours this morning, Was a good fight but there were a few things wrong, Yeah including the ref, His ambysmal breakups etc, But hey no point letting it chew us up, I personally thought it was unfair decisons/breakups but hey its life, Also not in our favour was that all judges were american, Im not saying this because im a bad loser coz im not, im just proving a point,I been reading a few posts and saw a few slating our Ricky, But hey W**S like the ref Just to say well done Ricky you put up a good fight mate, no need to be sorry, coz you did what you could and just dident happen this time, I can imagine how your feelin coz i was pretty pid off too, and i bet alot of other fans were but ya know, Just keep in there mate, get back in that ring soon and work your magic, You got nothing to be sorry for and you still are our champ. Thanks for the excitment and keep ya head up buddy.

I was worried about Cortez when his name was announced - I thought he was showing signs of being too fussy when Ricky fought Castillo. Not docking a point for Floyds repeated us of the elbow in spite of at least three or four audible warnings seemed a bit “strange” too. Not saying it would have changed the result, but it certainly didn’t help.
We can’t blame the ref on this though. I think we have to look at the weight. Let’s be honest, if Collazo could punch or even string enough punches together to score a TKO, last night’s fight could never have been billed as “Undefeated”. Ricky just can’t boss and bully an opponent at welter. And credit where it is due, Mayweather was class and gave a masterclass in finishing. We are left to ponder whether the result would be the same at 140 when Floyd was on his way up through the divisions…
Cortez was VERY VERY poor, but guys, Mayweather was just too good as much as it pains me to say it. He toyed with Ricky, he let him go all out during the early parts of the rounds trying to tire him out then hit him with a combination of ultra quick accurate punches as the round came to a close. But all credit to Ricky cos he kept going back for more.
Ricky’s face at the end sadly told the story - his opponent was just too quick and too smart and he knew it, but let’s not forget that Welterweight isn’t natural for him but you have to admire his balls for having the courage to have a crack at the best in the business in unfamiliar surroundings. He typifies the British spirit and we should all be very very proud!
