By Ant Evans: There was a time not so long ago when James Toney would go from internet site to internet site, using his gift for talking smack to colourfully ‘call out’ various heavyweight champions. Not long back from the wilderness which was his career from 1995-2003, Toney was still considered merely an overweight curiosity at heavyweight and he literally needed to talk his way into getting a world title fight.

Now, the champions are calling him. Or, more specially, representatives of three of the four recognised champs are calling his promoter, Dan Goossen.

“We’re got offers to fight three world champions,” Goossen told SecondsOut. "We’ve got the ruling from the WBC that the Hasim Rahman v Oleg Maskaev winner must fight James immediately afterwards. We’ve also got a good offer for James to fight Wladimir Klitschko for the IBF title and Don (King, who has one more co-promotional option on Toney) has made us an other to fight (WBO champ) Serguei Lyakhovich.

“I’m going to talk with James and then decide what we are going to do.”

Goossen says he favours a rematch with Rahman, who an out of shape Toney held to a 12 round draw in March. The Goossen-Tudor boss said: “That’s the fight which already had the interest, because the first fight was so good and we have to resolve this issue.”

However, the feeling was that Toney was perhaps a little fortunate to get a draw against a Rahman who came in prime condition and with a sound strategy. Goossen admits: "Listen, I know people maybe this James isn’t what he was because he wasn’t at his absolute best. I know that’s the only reason Klitschko, who you know I call Chicken Kiev (Klitschko hails from the Ukrainian capital), is even mentioning James’s name.

“If they want to think that, fine, but I know and James knows what he still beat Rahman even though he couldn’t get any air because he’d been smoking too many cigars before March. Whatever the reason for us suddenly being in demand, I’m happy, because I know I’ve got the No.1 fighter in the division in James Toney.”

Goossen added that and Toney will make up their minds over the weekend.

Meanwhile, Irish journeyman Kevin McBride, who hasn’t done much since getting the better of Mike Tyson a year ago, is also in the frame to fight Lyakhovich.[/b]

Disgusting. I hope he fights Wlad & get’s his ass handed to him in supreme fashion.

not sure he would, but I would like to see him humbled. Rahman should have humbled him to lose the weight.

Anyway… He can’t fight Valuev. And he can’t fight Sergei. He can only fight Wladimer or Rahman again(or Maskaev if he beats Rahman)

matter of fact why doesn’t he fight Chris Byrd. It’s not a championship fight but its a good one.

Plus Byrd would dominate and clown James over 12 rounds and seeing James get embarrassed would sit better with me then watching him get knocked out ;D

I don’t think Byrd has enough left in his tank to take Toney, let’s all pray there is no rematch between Toney and Rahman.

JFat hahahahaha

I don’t think Byrd would beat toney at all. I really don’t see why you think byrd would embarass him please explain that one to me.

Fuck Don king… he just knows he’s loosing all of his title holders and Toney is his last shot… Why he is wasting our time with Wlad Toney is beyond me

Did Goossen actually say the Toney-Rahman fight was “So good”?

  1. Byrd has a wonderful jab(better then Rahmans lol)

  2. Byrd is a southpaw

  3. Byrd is faster

  4. Byrd is a counter puncher

  5. Byrd isn’t a single shot guy

Byrd would beat Toney very easily and pepper his face with jabs making it look like some ground beef

I’ve got to admit I think that Byrd would beat him… he’s not a true heavy weight but could beat them. He’s fast. technically very skilled he hasa good jab (unlike rahman) and can counter punch (unlike Rahman) and he wouldn’t follow toney into the pocket (unlike Rahman… who despite fighting a stupid fight STILL wasn’t beaten by Toney and in my opinion won)

James
Fat
Ass
Toney

JFAT. ;D

Heh heh heh.

First and foremost, the Rahman fight was NOT “so good”. Secondly no way Chris Byrd beats JFAT as you call him, let alone dominates him. And thirdly, Toney needs to get the hint and lose some fukin weight. An in shape Toney beats anybody at HW.

How come Ruiz and Toney never have to work their way back up the heavyweight ladder after losing/bad performance?

Toney has some fans, that’s why… He and Wlad are the only decent names in the division… As To ruiz… Yeah who knows.

In my book, Toney needs to get in back of the line. He’s proven nothing to deserve another shot. As much as I don’t appreciate Rahman, Toney barely got away with the draw.

Toney keeps gettin shots, because he is a rare commodity in the HW divsion, hes a Star.

Fat Toney will beat anyone of them guys. 8)

He & that other bone head (Mayorga) have a lot in common, huh?

I don’t think Byrd would beat toney at all. I really don’t see why you think byrd would embarass him please explain that one to me.
[/quote]because while Byrd might be a blown up cruiserweight he isn’t a fat hw…and he is far more active than Toney..Byrd tried to prove something against Wlad…and it backfired horribly..he wouldn’t just stand in front of Toney..He would make Toney MOVE to get to him..Toney doesn’t move because he is so out of shape…plus, Toney wouldn’t last 4 rounds with WLAD…

Toney deserves it and wins more than Mayorga.

He is also an excellent boxer and does not get dropped as easily as Mayorga these days.
