Although I say Louis is/was Greater, one on one, Holmes is that much bigger, and his jab would win him the fight.
But it would not suprise me if either fighter hit the deck, as both had softish chins, for the brilliant level they were at, but both had amazing recovery powers. 
Louis was a MUCH greater boxer, but Holmes would win because of the size difference.
I’m banging on about this at the moment but this size difference thing between old & new fighters is a bit of a myth at times. Louis often weighed in at just over 15 stone & a prime Holmes at about 15 stone 5lbs hardly any difference!
I’d pick Louis by late stoppage. Much bigger puncher, faster hands & a great finisher.
I think Harry Greb would win.
Holmes did have the style that could give Louis trouble, but Joe had, by far, the better punch.
Holmes is one of the best BOXERS as a heavyweight while Louis is THE GREATEST heavyweight (sure some people say Ali, I say Louis edges him out given his dominance from 1936 to 1950)…Larry Holmes had a habit of getting caught once or twice in a fight by some guys who were good but not great…I think Louis would hurt him and once you get hurt by ‘The Brown Bomber’ that was it.

Louis for me is deffo up there with Ali as GOAT of HW division. I use Louis in FNR4 for my career mode as i feel he has all the attributes to be the best, and more often than not he is ! Fantastic movement and devastating right hand !
Disagree with all. LOL. I’d take Holmes by an easy, wide UD. Louis had great power but you can’t hit what you can’t see and the fastest oppenent Louis ever faced was Billy Conn and Holmes every bit faster and much bigger than Conn. I think Holmes is the most underrated fighter of all time and I’d pick him to beat ANY heavyweight. With the best left jab in the business and a solid right hand that he showed in the Cooney fight. Holmes would pick Louis apart and keep him at bay with that long jarring jab and setting him up with a big right hand over and over making it look comical.
You lost me when you used Holmes’ ko of Cooney as a barometer of how good his power was-
Well said, I mean Joe louis is one of the few old time fighters that were not built up by myth..Most of his fights are available in one form or another for viewing and he has only lost to other greats…1 loss was before his true prime and the other 2 after his best days…all 3 are HOF fighters 1 of the 3 a top 20 atg HW the other a top 5…Even with the bum of the month stint Joe was never in question…
With that being said it is not as if he would walk over Holmes…Larry is a top 10 ATG HW but like stated he did get caught by lesser fighters when he should not have and if that was to happen against Louis Larry would be on his back for sure…

As for size in his prime Larry was 6’3" and went between 220 and 225…Joe was 6’1" and his weight varied but it really was not enough to make a huge difference…The speed of louis would have evened it out
Holmes wins with use of jab to hurt Louis and even stop him late. Louis was the 2nd best heavyweight champion ever but still think he would lose to certain fighters including Tyson early.

Not if Tyson crushed him first. Louis was a slow starter and had been knocked down early a number of times. Tyson best chances was early and he always started fast. If it did not happen early you could well be right with your opinion.

Max Schmelling found out what a slow starter Louis was when properly motivated. Given who Louis had to defend against, who could blame him for starting a little slow?
And you could count on 1 hand how many times Joe swung and missed with that right cross…he was a master at knowing his range and in my opinion he knew how to box enough to bother Tyson terribly.
Tyson in his prime got the hell rocked out of him by Smith and Bruno…what would happen if Joe dropped a right cross on Tyson’s chin?
No shame being wobbled by those two fighters but being knocked down by Two Ton Galanto etc that would be more worrying.

I think Louis would win as he would eventually get past the jab and when he did his freak power would KO Holmes. Good matchup here though, I like that one.
Love Joe Louis but I’ll take Holmes over him any day of the week. We’ve seen Louis completely outfoxed by guys like Billy Conn and Jersey Joe. Louis was one of the greatest boxer/punchers of all time but I see Larry keeping him off balance like Conn and Jersey Joe did and pumping that sledgehammer jab into Joe’s face at will.
Holmes by UD or late stoppage.
Do not think anyone in history can stop a prime Holmes, his chin and recuperative powers were second to none.
