Can we now allow these prospects to develop on their own time now, please? There is a reason for rankings and a reason why more experienced fighters win.
What happened with Richard Torrez Jr and now with Moses Itauma should not happen. We’ve been rushing these boys.
We also threw Jared Anderson in the dumpster. But, in my opinion, Anderson never really had it in him and it was a matter of time in any event.
But, Torrez Jr and Itauma could have been much more.
Honestly seems like we see this every 6 to 10 years and much more emphasized at heavyweight. Young promising prospects fast tracked, steered, to what passes for stardom and the reality of the sport catching them sideways and stopping it all in its tracks. But the current generation it is attempted with the rapidness of microwave popcorn and sold as an absolute certainty and expectation. Guys get a build and development that is treated as a formality rather than a learning experience along with the fans. Things move different now and every single fight, spar, interaction is highlighted and there to be scrutinized. Been thinking that lately, it’s almost as if some fighters are too over exposed. Literally, every single fight. And that wasn’t always the case. That was a pre mass media 24-7 existence. But as crazy as it sounds…fans do not need to see every single fight coming up 
. One minute a guy is knocking everyone flat, then how dare he gets extended over 10 or take a wobble and suddenly they are “all hype and exposed”. When the truth is this used to happen all the time in off-air, low card journeymen gimme matches. It’s feckin essential to get hit in the mush back and answer internal questions before finding yourself being mentioned in the same sentence at Tyson and in a firefight vs world class competition. I’ve seen mentions of Wlad and his first loss and similarities gassing out but in no way was even Wlad mentioned in the top 10 rankings or being anointed world wide. He also had a still vibrant division above him. I do put some space between a Torrez or Itauma as far as the big picture. As far as overall skillset, come up and what they will be surrounded by and how they can move forward. Itauma had the world at his feet and if done properly has the natural talent to rebuild, one step at a time, properly. As much as I find it easy to be a fan of Torrez, he’s a likable straight forward fella, I think the ceiling was already in sight with him it was just a matter of how fun and bumpy the ride got. With both, I do wonder if they will be even afforded proper time for a realistic rebound. That goes for promotion, networks and equally fans. Get off the screen…go stomp a can or two. Answer questions for themselves before even thinking of anyone else. This went into a ramble but OPs point is spot on as well as a timeless occurrence.
each fight needs to be teaching a fighter something. knocking out 8 to 10 guys in a round or 2 won’t do that. activity matters, especially for developing prospects. moses only fought twice last year & this was his second fight this year. that’s terrible. he needed be in there with some durable guys that would take him 8 and 10 rounds. i’m not sure if it was pure arrogance from team moses but he wasn’t properly prepared or seasoned. the sanctioning bodies need to stop rating these guys at the top until they actually earn it
It happened in the past and it will continue to happen in the future.
It’s a calculated risk but i think Itauma did prove he has the skills to be a top heavyweight.
Joe Louis came back and became a great.
I remember when people were moaning about Deontay bombing out bums for as long as he was before he took a step up and bombed them out too. There was a considerate build up that led him to a title… that he kept for quite some time. Now Itauma and Torrez Jr won’t have that chance.
Bring back midweek fights and his fighting every few weeks as they build their career…
Those days are long long gone. Promoters just want the big ones now as do the fighters. Can’t blame them really but not good for the fans.
