Tim Whitherspoon, Tony Tubbs, Greg Page, Dokes and Pinklon Thomas were many things in 86… but ‘conditioned’ was not one of them!
April 1986 top ten;
Champion: Spinks, Great Light Heavy, but was never totally comfortable at Heavyweight.
#1 Tim Whitherspoon, Could of… should of… might of…, but didn’t. Drugs and a lack of discipline saw to that.
#2 Larry Holmes, getting ready for the Spinks rematch, but already arguable as much as eight years past his best.
#3 Trevor Berbick, deserves kudos for making the most of the little he had, the 1986 version of Johnny Ruiz.
#4 Frank Bruno, great conditioned fight, heavy handed, but seriously lacking natural ability.
#5 Pinklon Thomas, supposedly the next big thing, until he lost to the poor Berbick, drugs ruined any chances he had.
#6 Mike Weaver, ancient Hercules had just beaten the streaking Carl Williams, but was a couple days away from getting flattened by Bonecrusher.
#7 James Douglas, great abilities, when he could be bothered to train and motivate himself, which was rarely.
#8 Tony Tucker, had the size and boxing ability to be superb, but once again drugs came into play.
#9 Tyrell Biggs, he may of only been 8-0, but he looked for real…shame he wasn’t!
#10 Marvis Frazier :o well I did say the 86’s Heavyweights sucked! ;D
That top 10 is just as weak, as it is today IMO.
