Does having an afro, or Did having an afro make it easier for the opposing fighter to find his target and score a knockout. My logic here is…Afro equals bigger target to hit. Evidence of this is when Tyson beat Donnie Long and some other guy who’s afro was less than round. And also when Ali beat Foreman. O0
Haha, wierd logic but who knows ???
One issue I could see with having an afro is the water retention and water dripping into your eyes over the course of a fight. I think that’s why most fighters have shaved or buzzed heads.
An afro is like having long hair in boxing; counter productive. I mean think about it, if you’ve been drenched in water by your corner in between rounds and then go back out and get nailed on the face and head, you’re hair is going to shake with the reverberations, making the impact look bigger and more effective than it was and thus easier to score and could work against you. It sounds wierd I know but there is a degree of logical to this line of thinking.
you can’t get a concussion from being hit in your hair… ![]()
Wouldn’t help though… I make it a rule to get a hair cut before a bout… hate having it long
My girlfriend always says during boxing matches that having an afro is an unfair advantage cos it would absorb a lot of the power for roundhouse punches.
She says that all boxers should develop an afro. O0
I accept she is not Teddy Atlas, but I aint no fool so I just agree with her. ![]()
I’ll bet Hasim Rahman wished Holyfield had an afro after their fight.
I agree with Adam… If the fighter misses you but connect with your fro, you’re not gonna take any damage… unless of course the pick is still in it. OUch!
My point about afros in boxing wasn’t to do with water retension or getting knocked out by being hit in the afro. Just like I wouldn’t claim that having bushy eyebrows would shield getting cuts round the eyes. My point was if you hit in the general direction of the afro, and your opponent moves left or right or ducks you may just be more likely to connect with face or head than if the guy had a skin head. I know I’d rather fight a boxer with an afro than with a skin head. Its to do with the bigger surface areas in front of you more than anything.
if u get hit right on the fro` it will pad the punch, but technically you cant punch someone where the hair is

Absolutely not. Afro’s along with long hair retain the sweat and water during a fight. Not only can this be dangerous with water and sweat pouring into one’s eyes, it looks like you are getting hit with bombs with the way the water flies off every time you get hit with a semi-clean shot. It could cause the rounds to go the other way. The less hair the better.
:coolclick:
that is the same reason that pro wrestlers grow their hair long
