Puerto Rican former boxer Pritchard Colón passed away yesterday at the age of 33. He had spent the last 11 years trying to recover from a fight vs Terrel Williams in 2015 in which he reportedly received over 70 rabbit punches. These caused a cerebral hematoma which led Pritchard to go into a coma.
My thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.
It’s a stark reminder that boxing is an inherently dangerous sport… and that rules and good reffing are of utmost importance. We’ll never know how far Pritchard could’ve gone in the sport. His life was cut short way too soon.
His death caught me by surprise. Hadn’t heard much about him lately, so I figured he had adapted to his new living conditions. Maybe bound to a wheelchair… but I had no idea he would die so young. You’re right. This has been hell for his family.
Rest in peace Prichard. Went back and found the RBR of that card and man ok, I was rough on Colon. Just a mess of a fight and ultimately a tragic example of the permanent risks and damage every single fighter takes and collects. No matter the level there are no “bums” lacing up gloves and climbing into a professional ring truly not knowing if it will be their last night. Certainly more than I’ve done ffs. His parents are saints also, literally by a son’s side, fighting his fight that became theirs, to his last day. RIP
