Well… it’s that time again. I’m glad the NBA Finals are over, cause now I can concentrate only on the World Cup. (BTW… I’m super glad the New York Knicks won. Their first championship since 1973). The US got off to a pretty good start, although their victory was against Paraguay. Not exactly a world power. I watched the Germany-Curacao game, where there was a few minutes of excitement as Curacao made it a 1-1 tie during the first half. But then Germany pulled away on their way to a 7-1 blowout victory. Still early in the group stage, but I’m gonna try and see as many games as I can. After all the drama and shenanigans surrounding the US venues… I hope it’s all over and back to competition. ---

Scotland won their match which was good to see but have it all to do against Morocco and Brazil. They will be lucky to get 3rd and qualiify. England playing on Wednesday and I hope we can do something but the hot weather will not be kind to us. Spain will be Europe’s favourite and France could be next with the Portugal and the Germans. I like Japan but they have a tough group. I would like Canada to do well but Mexico should be the best of the host nations. There are too many teams and the competition is too long. ---

I don’t know whether this group has the benefit of an indoor stadium. Top scoring 3rd teams do go through to the next stage. I always fear for England but hope for the best. I think Croatia may be too old so can see England qualify through the group. ---

Never has there been a world cup I’ve watched so little of so far. Kick off times not the best for us mind. Too many teams for me and going on way too long. Am sure I’ll get into it as it progresses. The good thing about being an England fan of a certain age is that your expectation is so so low. Climate won’t be good for us either. ---

I tried. I really honestly did. But for the life of me I just cannot get into soccer. Or as non 'Muricas refer to it “football” 😆. The extent of my daily knowledge is that team Iran managed a draw with Sweden? Or Switzerland? Maybe Samoa. And they were immediately forced to leave the (our) country. That was just shitty but on brand. Got about 15 minutes of Argentina tonight and Messi was set to break a record. And apparently, the Tartan army and fans drank some watering holes in Boston dry and local places had to call in “emergency beer deliveries”. Now _that_ is marketing. ---

That sweaty Gollum, Gianni Infantino, corruptly awards yet another world cup to a country without much of a football culture. So it’s in Mordor, ruled over by the Orange Sauron. He has instructed his Orcs to not issue visas to anybody he disapproves of, and the chiselling and money grab is underway in a big way. Ever feel you are fundamentally unwelcome in a country, but they still rip you off to the max whilst hating you? ---

Even today I’m about the only one in my family that likes it. I’ve come to love the international competitions (World Cup, EuroCup, CopaAmerica, etc). But I’m still lukewarm on club soccer, especially the MLS. 😆 Frankly, I’d rather watch Real Madrid vs Barcelona ANY day, before I watch Orlando City SC vs Columbus Crew. 😆 ---

Best I’ve seen us start in a tournament for a long long time. We have a good squad and are a real threat on the attack but frailties in defence plain to see. Theres a long long way to go and I’ll never get carried away any more and think we can go all the way - I’ve been around too long - but after the first round of matches we’ll be considered real contenders. Cape Verde continue doing miracles with 2-2 draw against Uraguay. Curacao goalkeeper a hero against Ecuador. Japan are fantastic to watch. ---

I love the way the big stars are shining. Messi with 5 goals so far. Mbappe with 4. Even Norway’s Haaland is in the race with 4 as well. Other notables are Harry Kane with 2, US’s Balogun with 2, and Vini Jr. with 2. Some great matches so far. I’m enjoying the hell out of it. ---

So it looks right now like the Round of 16 might have some doozies… Germany vs France Portugal vs Spain Brazil vs Norway Mexico vs England Argentina vs Australia Other likely Round of 16 games would be: Netherlands vs Canada USA vs Belgium Unless of course there’s upsets in the Round of 32. 😉 ---

Topped the group. First objective achieved. You have to grow into a tournament so all is not lost. Yet. Many positives many negatives about our performances so far.
