Calzaghe Vs Lacy

WBO World Super-Middleweight Champion Joe Calzaghe will get a unification showdown against IBF holder Jeff Lacy if he beats Mario Veit in Germany next month said promoter Frank Warren.

The unbeaten Welshman defends his title against mandatory challenger Veit on May 7 in Braunschweig and Warren has had talks with Showtime chief Jay Larkin and Lacy’s promoter Gary Shaw for the unbeaten American to face Calzaghe in the UK this September.

Calzaghe now has a great incentive to do an even better job than his 120-second blitz of Veit in April 2001 when he hammered the German with his lightning-fast power-punching.

Florida based Lacy has fought in Britain twice before; on the Calzaghe-Miguel Jimenez undercard at Cardiff Castle and in Manchester on a Ricky Hatton card and will not flicker at the prospect of putting his title on the line against Calzaghe here.

A Calzaghe-Lacy super-fight will end a summer of blockbuster shows featuring British boxers that already includes Kostya Tszyu v Ricky Hatton and Scott Harrison v Michael Brodie.

Warren said, “Providing Joe comes through against Veit, which I am confident he will do, he will be looking at a unification fight against the IBF champion Lacy in September,”

“Following positive discussions with Jay Larkin and Gary Shaw we are confident in making the fight and will confirm details after the Veit fight,”

“Joe has called for a unification fight for some time now and Lacy wants the fight so the ball is now in Joe’s court and he will have to do the business in the ring on May 7 to make it happen.”

I’ll believe it when I see it

I was just about to post it right before Memphis comes along with it.

Few balls have returned from that neck of the woods I’m afraid…

I really hope this fight does happen though. A win for Joe would give him a top tier victory and a win for Jeff would add to his credibility. It also has all the ingredients for a great fight. Please Happen!

Crosses fingers

This would be great…if it were possible…but it’s not! Cal will stump his toe entering the ring & the fight will be off.

Will be a intersting fight but i see that Calzaghe will fight first with German Boxer Veit ! ! !

Boy you’re quick off the mark!

Why is Calzaghe talking of super middleweight fights when he has been whinging about the difficulty pg making the weight for the last 2 years!? Maybe its because Plan A (land an easy shot against Woods) didn’t come off when he put the challenge in.

That fight won’t happen…Joe will run like a dog that just slipped a nuetering session!

;D

Wow he really did say that

Yep. I certainly did.

I was honestly surprised that he took the fight.

Calzaghe floundered (IWO) on that one…at the time regarding the injury…but in the end…he turned around & pulled it outta his ass.

Proud to say…that once again…I was wrong.

Personally I was vocal about Joe schooling Lacy, but at the weigh in my thoughts changed. Hell even 2 rounds into the fight Joe was leaving his head out there saying hit me hit me pls Mr. Lacy. Wasn’t convinced till about round 5

Oh babe…I was as up front about it as I could be.

I said that Joe would technically too sound…but I always thought that Lacy’s power would come through…but as I kept on tryin to pound into everyone’s head including my own…Winky Wright couldn’t be in the ring for Lacy…& all that vaunted sparring & training didn’t add up to Wink’s defense.

Being a fan of both I was pretty torn…but once the bell rang @ the end of the 1st…I knew Lacy was fwocked.

Calzaghe was too calm & Jeff was to eager for the drop.

Lol - I was bored and goin through the old pages and just found that.

To be fair Wackster, when the fight was made and in the run up to the fight you were probably the most objective person on the site and did warn a lot of people out JC

Indeed…here is the funny thing about boxing fans & the majority of people on this site…they can’t be objective.

There are numerous members on this site that often go gunning for Wacko (so to speak) with all this “Wacko…last week you said this & this week you said that!” …& the funny thing is…I always admit to it.

It has always bewildered me that people can’t see past the fighter in front of their faces sometimes.

With boxing…I’ve got many MANY favorite fighters…but only a handful of FAVS (again…so to speak) & when they match up…people just can’t get the fact that I support them both & argue for & against their pros & cons.

Let’s use Lacy Calzaghe, Taylor Hopkins, Wright Taylor for examples.

No matter who wins in those fights…I’m happy…if all is no the up & up.

Then again…I look at it a bit more broad. Wright is my favorite of all time tied with Sturm & Hopkins being first…but I honestly feel that it’d be better for boxing if Wright lost…now I don’t want Wright losing…but Taylor’s younger & more matches are to be made…but…then again…I want my bwoy Wright to win.

Sounds confusing…but that’s just me.

Mallinagi for example…he’s a prick & I can’t stand him…I want to see him get beat the fwock down by Cotto…& Cotto is another of my FAVS…but then again…I think that Paulie is mega talented & impresses me to no end…whether he has KO power or not…that kid is skillled.

I just don’t see it so short sightedly because it shortens the enjoyment for Wacko.

Heh heh heh heh.

THat is so wrong on so many levels! ;D

Here here and a CC to you my friend!!

:coolclick: right back babe. ;D
